Study Duration & Entry Requirements

Duration of Programmes

Expectedly, there is considerable flexibility in the duration of programmes of the university since there is a lot of variation and differences among degree candidates. The following time periods may be taken as a good guide:

Certificate of Professional Studies

This is a certificate of competence granted to candidates who demonstrate ability in a given vocation or field of study. Evidence of studies of between 6 to 12 months is required.

Associate Degree/Diploma

Evidence of studies lasting for between 12 to 24 months depending on the background of the student.

Master’s Degree

The programme is for a duration of 15 to 36 months depending on the background of the student. Admission is open to persons holding a bachelor’s degree or HND or a professional qualification acceptable to the Admissions Committee.

Doctor of Philosophy/Doctor of Management/DBA

The programme is for a duration of 24 to 36 months. Candidates who hold a master’s degree and who wish to extend the research carried out for the master’s programme may take less time to complete the degree. At all times, the end product of the research must result in original contribution to knowledge.

Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.)

Holding the degree of Doctor of Letters signifies that the recipient is a highly lettered person, i.e., the person is a highly knowledgeable authority in that discipline. This is a post-doctoral degree in the humanities within the university as scheme of work. Only persons who hold an earned doctorate or Fellowship of a reputable professional body, who also have published works to their credit can apply to be considered. The works submitted are assessed by peers at a panel. Candidates are further required to make a prescribed submission on the subject of Management Consulting to fulfil the degree validation and accreditation requirements for the CMC certification.

Bachelor’s Degree

This is a qualification open only to mature adults of not less than 30 years old who have previously undertaken a two to three year diploma course in a Polytechnic or University. Experienced managers with considerable in-service training may also be accepted. Duration of the programme is 24 to 48 months depending on the student’s background. Transfer candidates from other degree programmes or candidates already holding full professional qualifications in related disciplines are similarly welcome. Candidates who hold degree level qualifications such as chartered accountants, chartered bankers, HND, etc, but who still wish to acquire a bachelor’s degree in their discipline may be granted credit for each unit of the degree course previously covered in their professional examinations. The candidate is then required to study the remaining course units for the degree and any new optional courses he or she wishes to offer. The candidate then prepares a dissertation project to demonstrate competence in research methodology and report writing skills. Candidates in this category may take considerably less time to complete the programme.

Concurrent Registration

Candidates may be permitted to enrol concurrently for the Bachelor and Master, or for the Master and Doctorate if, in the opinion of the Admissions Committee, such enrolment will serve the needs of candidates and their sponsors. Candidates will be required to complete the work on the lower degree before crossing over to the next higher degree. While this may be done, the university ensures that, at all times, the course work requirements and the standard of the degree are not to be compromised.

Doctor of Science (D.Sc.)

The Doctor of Science degree is the equivalent of the Doctor of Letters in the sciences. Similar conditions apply.
